According to President William Ruto, in an effort to close the teacher-to-student ratio deficit nationally, his administration would hire nearly 30,000 teachers in the first month of 2023
Speaking on Wednesday in the Nairobi County community of Embakasi, Ruto stated that this will be the first stage of the anticipated 116,000 teacher intake.
President Ruto intends to collaborate with the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) to upgrade school infrastructure and increase school nutrition in an effort to increase enrollment and performance, according to a statement released by State House.
The recruiting and posting of 14,460 new teachers nationwide was announced by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia last week at the annual “World Teachers Day” celebrations.
This followed the Treasury’s April provision of Ksh.3.7 billion to address the gap, which has been partly ascribed to the government’s 100% transition strategy, which aims to ensure that all pupils who complete their primary education are completely enrolled in secondary schools.
At the time, Dr. Macharia claimed that Treasury had given TSC Ksh. 2.5 billion to hire 5,000 permanent teachers and Ksh. 1.2 billion to hire 6,000 of their intern counterparts.
Prior to this, TSC revealed that it was severely short of instructors in both elementary and secondary schools, totaling 114,581.
We are grateful to the government for providing the cash necessary to enable us to hire, on average, 5,000 new teachers each year for our public schools. However, there is still a need for 114,581 more teachers in elementary and post-primary institutions, Dr. Macharia said in March at the announcement of the 2021 KCPE results.
