Ministry of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi
For eight election areas, Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i has proclaimed Monday, August 29 to be a vacation.
Mombasa County, Kakamega County, Kacheliba Constituency (West Pokot), Pokot South Constituency, Kitui Rural Constituency, and Rongai Constituency are among the eight locations (Nakuru County).
The other two districts are Nyaki West Ward in Imenti North Constituency, Meru County, and Kwa Njenga Ward in Embakasi South Constituency, Nairobi County.
The vacation only applies to the areas specified, not the entire nation, the minister stated in a news release dated Friday, August 26.
After elections in the mentioned locations were postponed on August 9 due to ballot paper mix-ups, violence, and vote delays, voters will cast ballots to choose their new leaders.
According to Matiang’i, it is a criminal offense for any company to neglect to release their staff to vote under the Employment Act, according to a special gazette notification with number 9957 dated Friday, August 25, 2022.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was permitted to utilize day schools as polling places earlier this week by the Education Ministry, who claimed that the institutions would only be closed for that day (Monday, August 29).
George Magoha, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, stated that if tallying continues into the following day, the IEBC will have to relocate the activity to colleges and polytechnics, which are higher education institutions.
On the other hand, boarding school students won’t be impacted by the elections.
New governors will be chosen by voters in Mombasa and Kakamega, while new members of parliament will be chosen by voters in the Kacheliba, Kitui Rural, Pokot South, and Rongai seats.
The residents of the wards of Nyaki West and Kwa Njenga will elect their new MCAs.
The process needs to go more quickly, according to Wafula Chebukati, chair of the IEBC, so that the commission can publish the complete list of all elected officials for the 2022 elections.
Kenyans can learn which political party holds the majority position and which one holds the minority position in the national, Senate, and county assemblies by consulting the membership list.
At the same time, it enables the commission to determine who would be accepted into each assembly.
