Deputy President William Ruto at his Karen office
The newest member of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance is Kiraitu Murungi, the head of the Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) and the recently-retired governor of Meru.
At his Karen office in Nairobi on Friday, President-elect William Ruto welcomed Murungi together with a number of prominent figures and more than 40 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) from the counties of Meru and Embu.
The Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) is welcome in Kenya Kwanza, we say. Their willingness to collaborate with us demonstrates that leaders concur that Kenyans’ interests come before our own or our party’s.
The long-serving lawmaker would defend his remarks by urging the people of Meru to support a particular presidential contender.
“I have the right to choose who I will vote for as a Kiraitu Murungi. I will support Raila Odinga along with my wife. However, I haven’t urged you to cast your ballot for Raila. Vote for anybody you choose, Kiraitu advised in June 2022, just a few days before the elections on August 9.
Along with the Ford-K leader Moses Wetangula, Aden Duale, Salim Mvurya, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, and former Meru Senator Mithika Linturi, Ruto welcomed Kiraitu to his camp.
